WORLD FREIGHT CENTRE REFURBISHMENT CONTRACT FOR RUSSELLS CONSTRUCTION

Russells Construction has won an £800,000 contract for the refurbishment of a fast growing warehousing, transportation and logistics hub in Manchester. The team from Russells Construction has commenced a three-month project for A K W Group Plc at its World Freight Centre site.

Work began at the World Freight Centre on Europa Way in Trafford Park last month and is due for completion in November. The scheme involves the refurbishment of the 78,000 sq ft warehouse and contract packing facility in order to support A K W Group's continued expansion and meet its new sustainability criteria.

The contract involves the replacement of the existing roof, re-cladding of the internal and external walls, re-laying of the concrete floor, electrical installation (including environmentally friendly movement sensors to reduce energy wastage) and decoration of the whole internal structure.

The warehouse, which houses the firm's expanding Contract Packing service, is part of the World Freight Centre's 500,000 sq ft Manchester base. Parent company A K W Group PLC also operates two other sites within Trafford Park and provides employment for more than 220 staff.

Tony Worthington, founder and chairman of A K W Group PLC, said the time was right for an upgrade. He said: "We are one of the fastest growing companies in the North West and, in order to support that expansion, we are in need of greater capacity for our storage and packaging operations. The Trafford Park warehouse is at the heart of our strategic operations and it is therefore vitally important for us to have a state-of-the-art facility enabling us to offer improved services to our customers.

"As a BRC certified company, it is crucial for our property assets to fulfil certain sustainability standards. Following discussions with Andrew Russell I felt confident in entrusting Russells Construction with this investment. We believe in supporting local business and, as our near neighbours, we are pleased to have them on board."

This is the latest industrial scheme for Russells Construction, which has expertise across a range of sectors including retail, residential and commercial. The company, based on Clarence Avenue in Trafford Park, is currently working on a range of projects including a £9m contract for Holiday Inn in Manchester, a £4m contract for a retail park in Hull and £2m contract for an office complex in Trafford.

Andrew Russell, managing director of Russells Construction, said: "A K Worthington Ltd is a well known and highly respected warehousing and transportation specialist and their 26 Bond building is an iconic building within Trafford Park.

"The refurbishment will provide staff and customers with a fantastic facility which meets the firm's new sustainability standards. I am delighted to have won this contract and to have embarked on what I hope will become a great working relationship.

"The diversity of Russells Construction's current projects demonstrates our ability to deliver across a variety of sectors. This is down to the skills and expertise of our dedicated team of professional craftsmen and dealmakers and our determination to ensure both quality and value for money for our customers."
